Common Skincare Mistakes You Might Be Making (And How to Fix Them)

BLOG, Skincare / Thursday, August 8th, 2024

When it comes to skincare, we all want that glowing, healthy complexion. However, even with the best intentions, there are common mistakes that can undermine your efforts at any age. Here’s a rundown of some of the most common skincare mistakes you might be making, along with tips on how to fix them.

1. Not Double Cleansing

Cleansing is the foundation of any skincare routine, but one of the biggest mistakes is not double cleansing, especially if you wear makeup, sunscreen, or live in a polluted area. Double cleansing involves using a cleanser to remove makeup, dirt, and excess oil, followed by a cleanser to clean your skin thoroughly. This two-step process ensures that your pores are free of impurities, allowing your skincare products to work more effectively. You can use the same cleanser, or mix it up.

Pro Tip: Makeup Remover Towelettes are both gentle and moisturizing, helping to remove excess dirt, oil and makeup, leaving behind skin that feels soft and clean. You can use these as your first cleanse.

My Pick: Motives Makeup Remover Towelettes. They have a subtle, zesty lime fragrance that will awaken the senses for a refreshing, always convenient experience. They are also great to keep next to your bed to help with the next mistake!

2. Sleeping with Makeup On

We’ve all had those nights where we’re too tired to take off our makeup before bed, but this is one of the worst things you can do for your skin. Sleeping with makeup on can clog your pores, leading to breakouts, dull skin, and even premature aging. Always take a few minutes to cleanse your face before bed, no matter how exhausted you are—your skin will thank you for it.

Pro Tip: Get in the habit of cleansing your skin earlier in the evening rather than waiting right before bed. You may not be as tired and it will allow you more time to complete your nighttime regimen.

3. Not Washing Pillowcases Enough

You might not think about it, but your pillowcase can accumulate a lot of bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells. If you’re not washing your pillowcases regularly, all that buildup can transfer to your face while you sleep, causing breakouts and skin irritation. Just think about how long your face is on your pillowcase every night. Make it a habit to change your pillowcase at least once a week, or even more often if you have acne-prone skin.

4. Skipping SPF on Cloudy Days

One of the most common skincare mistakes is skipping SPF when it’s cloudy or during the colder months. UV rays can penetrate through clouds and windows, causing skin damage even on overcast days. Sun protection is crucial year-round to prevent premature aging, dark spots, and the risk of skin cancer. Make sure you’re applying a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 every morning, rain or shine.

My Pick: Lumière de Vie® Daily Brightening Broad Spectrum SPF 50, the essential your skin can’t live without. Protect and care for the skin with this silky, fast-absorbing crème that provides high protection from UVA and UVB exposure while soothing, brightening and evening skin tone. Protect your skin every day; you can thank us later. I especially LOVE it because it doesn’t feel greasy on the skin.

5. Not Using a Toner

Toners often get overlooked, but they play a crucial role in your skincare routine. A good toner helps to balance your skin’s pH, remove any lingering traces of makeup or cleanser, and prepare your skin to absorb the next steps in your routine. Skipping toner can mean that your serums and moisturizers don’t penetrate as effectively, making them less effective overall. Look for a toner that suits your skin type and adds hydration or addresses specific concerns like oil control or soothing irritation.

Pro Tip: Commit to finding a 3 step skin care regimen for you and your skin type. It’s extremely important to take care of your largest organ-your skin by using a cleanser, toner & moisturizer at minimum. But it can be so overwhelming with the array of skincare products available. There is also so much confusion about skincare ingredients and how to properly use them. Check out my blog post: How To Build a Custom Skincare Routine for YOU and Your Skin.

6. Over Exfoliating

Exfoliation is key to removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover, but overdoing it can be just as harmful as not doing it at all. Over-exfoliating can strip your skin of its natural oils, cause irritation, and even lead to inflammation and breakouts. Stick to exfoliating 2-3 times a week, and be gentle with your skin—especially if you’re using chemical exfoliants like AHAs and BHAs. Always follow up with a good moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated.

7. Using Too Many Products at Once

It’s easy to get caught up in the latest skincare trends and want to try every new product out there. However, using too many products at once can overwhelm your skin and lead to irritation, breakouts, or even adverse reactions. It’s important to introduce new products gradually, one at a time, and give your skin time to adjust. Stick to a streamlined routine that addresses your main concerns without overloading your skin.

8. Skipping Nighttime Skincare

Your skin does a lot of repairing while you sleep, making your nighttime routine just as important as your morning one. Skipping your evening skincare can mean missing out on the benefits of products that work best overnight, like retinoids, peptides, and hydrating masks. Make sure you cleanse, treat, and moisturize your skin before bed to wake up with a refreshed, glowing complexion.

9. Neglecting Your Neck and Hands

We often focus on our faces when it comes to skincare, but our neck and hands are just as prone to signs of aging. The skin on these areas is delicate and can show wrinkles, sunspots, and sagging if not cared for properly. Make sure to extend your skincare routine to include your neck and hands, applying sunscreen, moisturizer, and any anti-aging products you use on your face.

My Pick: Pentaxyl is great for your face, neck and hands. External factors like pollution and internal factors like oxidative damage and poor diet often stress the skin. This can leave the skin looking dry, dull and aged. As part of the natural aging process, the skin begins to develop wrinkles and furrows around the forehead, brow and eyes. Pentaxyl has harnessed the age-fighting power of peptide technology, with three unique peptides: Pamitoyl-Pentapeptide-4, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide and Acetyl Hexapeptide-8.

This proprietary blend of peptides reduces the appearance of wrinkles and furrows, helps skin look firmer and more supple while giving the skin a youthful glow. Pentaxyl can also help reduce the appearance of stretch marks. While nothing can rewind time, Pentaxyl has been shown to support healthy more youthful-looking skin by fighting against the visible signs of aging.

10. Not Drinking Enough Water

Good skin starts from the inside out, and one of the simplest things you can do for your complexion is to stay hydrated. Drinking enough water helps to keep your skin plump, clear, and glowing. If you’re not drinking enough water, your skin may appear dull, dry, and more prone to fine lines. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, and consider incorporating hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables into your diet.

11. Ignoring Your Skin Type

Using products that aren’t suited for your skin type can lead to a host of issues, from breakouts to dryness or excessive oiliness. It’s important to understand your skin type—whether it’s oily, dry, combination, or sensitive—and choose products that cater to its specific needs. If you’re unsure of your skin type, consider seeing a dermatologist or skincare professional for a consultation.

Pro Tip: It can be difficult to determine whether you have a normal, dry, oily, combination or sensitive skin type. With all the buzz surrounding different skincare products for specific issues, the list of signs to look for keeps growing. Not to mention your skin is changing seasonally, plus it can also change with age. For example, younger people are more likely than older folks to have a normal skin type.

So what exactly is the difference? Your skin type depends on things such as: How much water is in your skin, which affects its comfort and elasticity. How oily it is, which affects its softness. Finally, how sensitive it is. In this blog post, I walk you through some steps to help you determine your skin type.

By avoiding these common skincare mistakes and adopting healthier habits, you can help your skin look its best. Remember, consistency is key, and taking the time to care for your skin now will pay off in the long run.
