Fall In Love With Your Skin

Fall is in the air, and a change of season is a great time to prioritize your skin. It’s a great time to amp up consistent exfoliation followed by deep hydration for fresh, renewed skin. It all sounds great, but I know how confusing it can be when selecting the right products. My goal today is to share some great ingredients along with the best products to help you “Fall” in love with your skin!

The great news is, our skin naturally sheds cells about every 30 days or so. However, if your skin is damaged (common in summer from sun exposure) or you have aging skin, your cell turnover slows down and this can happen less frequently. We can help speed things up by regular exfoliation. There are two forms of exfoliators, physical & chemical and many products in each category on the market.

Chemical Exfoliators

Over the years chemical exfoliators aka “face peels” have become mainstream because of the many benefits they have on the skin. They really are the secret to smooth, soft glowing skin. After all, who doesn’t want their skin as soft as baby’s skin? Some of the most researched (and searched for) ingredients include alpha- hydroxy acids (AHAs), glycolic acid, lactic acid and beta- hydroxy acids.

Unlike facial scrubs, which usually have grainy ingredients that polish and slough off skin, chemical exfoliators use ingredients, such as acids to help loosen dead skin cells. The acids work by breaking down the sugars in the skin, which then causes the cells of the epidermis to loosen and slough off.

I know, sounds a little scary, but these aren’t the typical acids found in a chemistry lab. There are two types of chemical exfoliants: AHA, or alpha-hydroxy acids, and BHA, beta-hydroxy acids. The two most popular AHAs are glycolic and lactic acids. In cosmetics, BHA refers to salicylic acid.

Glycolic Acid 
Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid derived from sugar cane. Glycolic acid and the other alpha hydroxy acids are natural exfoliants that help remove dead skin cells. Because of this, glycolic acid and other alpha hydroxy acids help brighten the skin’s complexion and give it a more even tone. 

Lactic Acid 
Lactic acid is one of several alpha hydroxy acids. Lactic acid and the other alpha hydroxy acids are well known as effective exfoliants that help remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface.

Salicylic Acid 
Salicylic acid is a natural beta hydroxy acid compound with cleansing and exfoliating properties. It helps to exfoliate the skin and clean the pores, thereby reducing the appearance of skin blemishes.

Different enzymes and Retinol-Vitamin A, are also chemical exfoliating ingredients that you may see in your numerous skincare products.
