Summer is here and one of THE most brought up topics with my clients, is how to make your makeup sweat proof, water proof or humidity resistant. Whether you are running errands, spending a day at the beach or getting married, I have some of my best tips to ensure your makeup lasts all day long!
Don’t Skimp On Skin Prep
Yes, when we think about the longevity of makeup, it’s important to start with properly prepped skin. Now this may look different depending on your skin type. Skin prep actually starts with your 3-step skin care routine: properly cleansing your skin, toning, and moisturizing with the right products.
Cleansing will give you a fresh, sweat-free start, so you can start with a clean canvas. Toning ensures that your skin is at a balanced state with the right PH which will help with oil control and sweat production. And moisturizing will add enough moisture to the skin so your skin doesn’t feel dry and your body doesn’t overcompensate by producing oil.
Next choose the correct primer for your skin type. For dry skin, choose a primer that not only evens out the texture of your skin, but also provides a barrier on the skin that prevents your foundation from just absorbing into your skin. For oily skin, choose a primer that will absorb oil throughout the day to keep you shine free.

Choose The Right Products
Using the right products with the right ingredients is key! Choose face products such as foundation and concealer, choose light products that are water based and oil free. They will allow your skin to breathe and less likely to separate and clump up with perspiration. Tinted moisturizers are a great option!
You may also want to swap out your usual mascara, eyeliner and brow pencil for a waterproof formula. Just make sure you choose a formula that isn’t too harsh, and have the right cleanser to remove it.
Apply Correctly
When it comes to applying products such as foundation, concealer and eye shadow, less is more. Be sure to apply everything in thin layers. And if you are using sweat proof, waterproof formulas, they tend to dry fast, so you may want to speed up your application. Letting everything dry properly also prevents a smudgy mess.
Lock Everything In Place
Setting your makeup makes a world of difference! Apply a fine layer of translucent powder over your foundation. This will help lock your makeup in place. You can apply a bit more over any areas where you produce excess oil, especially your t-zone.

Set your look in place with a makeup setting spray.

You can even spray it on your skin prior to your makeup application for a little more oil control.
Helpful Habits
We can’t just tell our body to stop sweating, but there are a few helpful habits that you can practice that can help the longevity of your makeup. Avoid touching your face. The oil and sweat on your fingertips can transfer to your face and add to the sweaty situation. Plus, you’ll be smudging your makeup by touching and rubbing it with your hands. Instead, try using blotting papers to dab away the oil and sweat. Make sure you are gently blotting your face and not rubbing, doing this will minimize the shiny look your perspiration has created. You may also want to keep your hair away from your face. Greasy hair can make the situation worse.
And last, but not least, keep an eye on your water intake. A hydrated body will sweat less, plus it will prevent dehydration. Especially in hot and humid situations.
