How To Build a Custom Skincare Routine for YOU and Your Skin

Do you have a skin care regimen that is giving the results you need or are looking for? It’s extremely important to take care of your largest organ-your skin. But it can be so overwhelming with the array of skincare products available. There is also so much confusion about skincare ingredients and how to properly use them.

Recently, I was invited to host a live session teaching viewers how they can simplify your skincare routine and take the guesswork out of which products are best for you, your lifestyle & your commitment that provide results! Did you miss it? Don’t worry, I have it all here for YOU, my readers!

Step 1: Determine Your Skin Type

Before you get started, it’s helpful to know your skin type. If you don’t use the right skincare for your skin type it can throw everything off and not really be effective and, and in some cases, can even make things worse!

If you are unsure about what skin type you have, I have some steps to help you determine just that! You can read it HERE or use this helpful graphic.

Step 2: Determine Your Commitment

Skincare is a process that can take time to take effect. That’s why when you add a new skincare product to your routine, you may not see any difference right away. Ingredients take time to produce the results you want to see. It will take time and consistency when it comes to your skincare routine. The great new is: The skin renews itself every 28 days!

Only you can decide. How important is your skin to you? What products or steps are you willing to commit to for at least 28 days?

Not All Skincare Is Created Equal

Quality of ingredients: Differences in formulation—including coloring agents, emulsifiers, fillers, preservatives, and binders.

Concentration of ingredients: The higher the concentration of a particular ingredient, the more the skin will try to absorb it, leading to more of the active ingredient ultimately being relocated into the deeper layers of the skin.

Delivery system: The nature of the skin’s anatomy limits permeability, which is advantageous as a defense mechanism, but presents a challenge in delivering ingredients into the skin. Topical or transdermal delivery of ingredients are heavily researched, and how to overcome the protective barrier, making active ingredients more effective to positively enhance a desired result.

Step 3: Start With The Basics

Everyone should be using a cleanser, toner & moisturizer-twice a day. Can you commit to just 3 steps?

STEP 1. CLEANSE

Using a cleanser meets the skin’s basic need to be free of excess oil, dirt, and pollutants. If these impurities are not removed, you may experience dull, sallow skin; clogged, inflamed pores that can discolor and scar; or free radical oxidation that can damage cells, affect healthy cell renewal, irritate the skin, and initiate hyperpigmentation. To help avoid these negative effects, cleansing should be performed twice daily.

STEP 2: TONE & NEUTRALIZE

This is the skip that so many skip, because they don’t always know why they need to do it. It is actually a very important step because toning fulfills a basic daily need by preparing the skin to receive the benefits from other products. It should be performed twice daily, after cleansing. Toning works in several ways. It calms and soothes the skin; toning also minimizes the appearance of pores and balances the skin’s pH.

STEP 3: MOISTURIZE

The basic function of moisturizers is to help treat your skin when it’s dry and prevent it from drying out again. Moisturizers do this by holding water in the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin. But they have other functions as well. They can help protect your skin from the environment — applying moisturizer creates a barrier on your skin that keeps oils from escaping and harmful outside elements from causing dryness or irritation.

Step 4: Determine Your Skin Goals

If there was one thing you could improve about your skin health today – or prevent in the future – what would it be?

Perhaps you’re looking more hydrated or glowy skin, or maybe it’s fading the appearance of lines & wrinkles, or you want smooth skin, or long for acne free skin.

Enhance With Treatments

The treat step meets an essential advanced need of the skin when key components, functions, or structures within the skin are compromised, leading to signs of premature aging. Treatment products are specially formulated to target specific issues.
